Apart from thinking you're on the set of Goodnight Sweetheart this pub is great. Barmaids are friendly if a little eager to keep you drinking. As long as you can get by without swearing then you wont get any bother from Mr Waverley. Also free crisps are Free!!

Its a curio all right . A total museum piece blast from the past .
The barmaids are lovely but the manager eyes anyone under 40 (never mind 30) or anyone having a laugh with great suspicion , making one desire to leave forthwith .

Nice to see pint glasses with dimples though .
Its a unique place and deserves a bit of support but you get the feel the management want to keep a select crowd in here , and i guess if that gets them by fair enough .

I come to Edinburgh quite a few times a year and always insist on having a drink in this pub. I love this pub because it's very 1920's and I always find the bar staff very friendly. The only fault I can find is that there seems to be a strange smell in the ladies toilets and they look like they need a good clean but apart from that I think this pub is great!

While the atmosphere was unique, I would NOT recommend this pub if you are under 30. I had wanted to come here for weeks, and decided to take five of my friends here. Right from our entrance we were glared at by the barstaff. While reading the beers on tap, the barmaid pointed at me, and demanded "ID, all of you!" As we handed our IDs over, we were told "NONE of you are 18-- GET OUT." I was shocked and appalled-- I am 23 years old, with several years bartending experience, and have NEVER encountered anything like this. We were shocked, particularly because no one was under 19, yet attempts to point out the birthdays on our IDs failed, and we were promptly kicked out. Never in my life have I felt so disrespected. The next day I rang, and the bartender explained that it is an unofficial policy to keep the bar above 21. Also, she explicitly mentioned that it is an "old men's bar"-- so if you are in your 20's, or female, I'd advise you to NOT waste your money in this place unless you enjoy verbal abuse. Completely unacceptable.

This place has a bohemian vibe, for a pub. Well decorated but, but in need of redeorating, a sense faded glamour is well complimented with a noirish 1920/30 thing going on. It has a good atmosphere even when near emtpy.

Certainly not the most comprehensive bar (drinks wise) in town. A bit of an oddidty, and because of that worth supporting; as Edinburgh has a new generation of very crap bars which threaten place's like this existence.

This is a fantastic pub. Let down by the lack of a decent cask , but the keg is kept well. Great for small groups & couples. When I was there they were playing 20/30's music that worked well & added to the atmosphere. Hunt out & support unique boozers like this.
