Yes the good old ambiance is no more, but the wireless is free. It's still a good, congenial spot with helpful staff.

The pub has been re-vamped, and while yes it did have more soul before, one has to accept change is a foot not a hand (it walks rather than clinging on)

It sells great lager, Budvar, Staroprammen, Furstenburg and the there is alway Tennents or Tennents ice cold for the summer if your feeling skint.

Generally the service is good. If you are friendly to the staff, they are friendly to you - that is called Good manners. If you are rude or Condescending to the bar staff, why should you expect them to be nice back?
I have always found, give a smile and a bit of banter and you will get it back.

Agree with previous poster - theyve modernised the place and it looks fine but "who stole the soul" ??
Used to have a good list of real ales and a good atmosphere . You still need a compass to find the toilets though...

They have completely transformed this pub into a new trendy more open bar. The dank and dinge has disappeared but took the soul of the place with it. Still sells ales, but its original folk scottishness has been replaced with fancy furniture and big flat screen tvs. Ok pub if you like it swanky, not the kind of place to stay til closing. I preferred it the old way! If you liked the old drouthys try Doctors or the Southsider.

Small pub in a good location- close to many others in the area (typical Edinburgh!). Been there only once, but the service was lousy! Took very long to serve, even when the pub wasn't busy.

Tiny, squashed bar with slightly larger seating area at the back. Good for that sardine feel, but atmosphere is never lacking. Decent food and great bitter. Not a place to go when you're half-cut as you're bound to break your neck on the stairs between the rooms...
