Recently got a grilling from the landlord for being lovey-dovey with my girlfriend - no smooching involved (!). Landlord says 'we have standards' - and says punters could be 'embarrassed' in his reply to my complaint.

I said he was running a pub not a school, and I'm sure the punters can cope with a little hand-holding gay romance.

So thumbs down for the Cumberland (and I used to be a regular 'n all) and its offensive landlord.

Happily, there's plenty other nice places in the area to go to..

cheers, em

Lived across the street from the cumberland, then called the tilted wig, for a number of years it was full of stuffed shirts and edinburgh trendies became known then as the wilted prig. Sounds like it has improved

This is my local (20s walk) and I have lived around here most of my life. In fact I was 8 the first time I was in the place (called the Tilted Wig at the time). I am now 30 and I feel that the Cumberland has sold out. They are trying to squeeze every penny that they can out of the customer and that it has almost become a trendy bar and a place to be seen in. It has a better atmosphere on early to mid-week nights but is too loud and full of George St types on weekends and that isn't just the students but also the professionals.

If you are looking for a music-free, large football screen-free, good range of beers (not lager) on tap and whiskies "quiet drinks" kind of place - this is it! Apart from Fridays when it's full of suits (and sometimes gets crowded out with Marlboro light smoking up-market students). Also, it gets busy over the summer because of its glorious beer garden (complete with weeping willow). The friendly staff definitely add to the good vibe of the place - half of them live round the corner from the pub and you get the feeling they are happy to the there. So does the gorgeous wood-rich decor. Cheers!

The Cumby is getting back to its old self, it's even had a bit of work done on it. The bar staff are shit hot and quick to serve a decent pint. Foods pretty good quality, tho a wee bit pricy. An Edinburgh gem.
